A FRENCH SMALL-SWORD WITH FINELY CHISELLED GILT-BRASS HILT, CIRCA 1790 with German tapering blade of hollow-triangular section, etched and gilt over the greater part of its surface with allegorical figures, scrolls, trophies-of-arms and the inscription 'Liberty' all on a blued panel, the forte inscribed 'de la manufacture de la marquee à l'extra fin à Solingen' on a gilt panel, gilt-brass hilt cast and chased in low relief, comprising double shell-guard decorated with central ovals filled with differing trophies-of-arms, and beadwork borders interrupted by foliage and garlands, globular quillon, knuckle-guard decorated with further designs of beadwork and foliage, ovoid pommel, and solid grip each decorated with oval panels filled with trophies incorporating Phrygian caps 83.8cm; 33in blade
