He was master of the Horse1849-50, ADC 1850-52, and Lt. Colonel of his regiment November 1858. He was made CB on 11th May 1859 and received the India medal with clasp. He was made Lieutenant General in July 1881. The 7th Hussars saw much service during the India Mutiny where Sir William's regiment joined under Sir James Outram in February 1858. They were involved in the Siege of Lucknow, the actions at Baree Nawabgants, and Sultanpore.
